A mother and her 11-year-old daughter who suffers from kidney disease are preparing to do a pair of sponsored charity walks.

Eastchurch Primary pupil Madeleine Braby was diagnosed with the condition in 2007.

A year later, at the age of six, she had an operation to remove her left kidney although her remaining one functions at about 70% of normal.

Her mother Wendy Braby, who is a teaching assistant at her child’s school said: “It means she has to be careful about how much she has to drink.

“She has to drink at least two litres of fluid every day. She has a normal day to day life but she’ll never be able to do things like contact sports because of the possibility of her side being hit.”

Now the pair want to raise awareness of the disease and will be taking part in a seven mile walk of London bridges for Kidney Research UK on Sunday, July 14.

About 25 friends and family will them for the national event which goes from Tower Bridge to Westminster Bridge and then back again.

Mrs Braby, of Baldwin Road, Minster, said they are doing it because, “hopefully in a few years time they can help people like Madeleine to get a better kidney function".

Before then three generations of women in the family are taking part in the Race for Life in Maidstone this Sunday, July 7 in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Mrs Braby will be joined by her mother and her sister who lost her husband to testicular cancer 13 years ago when he was aged 27.

Madeleine will also be going with her sister Alex Braby, 14.
