An Islander celebrated her 101st birthday with staff and friends at Age UK Sheppey.

Winifred Kemp, known as Win, enjoyed cake, flowers, cards and a drop of Bailey’s at her special party in Trinity Road, Sheerness, on Friday.

Her actual birthday was on Sunday.

Originally from Poplar, London, when the Second World War started she signed up and spent four and a half years helping the British efforts at a camp in Bramley, near Basingstoke.

She made sure the armed forces were informed by keeping track of statistics such as the amount of ammunition they had available.

The former book-keeper moved to Barton Hill Drive, Minster, in 1955 and still lives in the same house.

She settled down with her husband Ernest, who passed away in 1971. All of her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren still live on Sheppey.

Mrs Kemp, who has outlived all 10 of her siblings, said: “There were eight survivors and the eldest one lived until she was 105. The others died at a normal age.

“My family keep saying to me ‘Just four more to go’!”
