Sheppey Crossing closed after accident on A249

The Sheppey Crossing has re-opened after being closed in both directions following an accident this morning during thick fog and icy conditions.

No one suffered serious injuries in the smash but when officers arrived on the scene and saw how icy and foggy it was they decided the road should be closed as a safety precaution. It re-opened just after 9.30am.

Lucy Hurdle, spokesman for Kent Police, said: "Police were called at 7.45am following a report that a vehicle travelling on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway of the A249 had collided with the central reservation.

"Officers attended the scene and the bridge is currently closed in both directions."
