Police persuade man not to carry out threat to jump from the A249 Sheppey Crossing bridge

The Sheppey Crossing was closed in the early hours of Sunday morning after a man threatened to jump off the top of the bridge.

Emergency services were called just after midnight when the man, in his 20s, was spotted walking along the crossing's northbound carriageway towards the Island.

It was reportedly suggested he intended to "harm himself".

A Sheppey Coastguard Rescue Team as well as fire crews and police were in attendance.

The man was safely detained by police and the crossing was re-opened by 12.50am.

The Sheppey Crossing - opened in 2006 - carries the A249 across The Swale, linking the Isle of Sheppey with mainland Kent.

At its highest point the bridge is 35 metres (115 feet) over the water.
