Prayers are being said today for victims of the huge Sheppey Crossing pile-up.

Six churches on the island are holding special services as they offer support to those affected by the massive crash.

As many as 130 vehicles were involved in one of Kent's worst accidents - eight people were seriously injured and dozens of others needed hospital treatment.

Shortly after the accident, a prayer meeting was held at Minster Abbey and ministers have been on hand in local hospitals and in every church for people who wish talk about the accident and to pray.

Vicar of Minster-in-Sheppey, the Revd Tim Hall, said: "It was a miracle that no one was killed and the serious injuries were restricted to just eight.

"God's hand was evident in this disaster, keeping people alive where it looked like there was no hope."

The Bishop of Dover, the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the crash. We thank God for the speedy and coordinated response of the emergency services whose swift actions helped mitigate this disaster."
