A copy of an ancient timepiece is to be installed during a ceremony at Minster Abbey in Sheppey

A replica of a 400-year-old sundial is about to be installed at Minster Abbey.

The previous timepiece was removed last year as its frame was rotten and in danger of falling and injuring someone.

Its face had also faded and was barely readable.

There has been a sundial at the Abbey’s porch since the 1700s.

It’s been renewed with a grant from the Friends of Churches charity.

The replacement will be unveiled in a ceremony on Sunday attended by The Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev Trevor Willmott.

The occasion will also see the reordering of the 7th Century Grade I listed Abbey.

It’s described as a “large and complex project” to open up the Anglo Saxon part of the church and “provide a unique and historic space which can be used for public events”.

Other planned improvements include installing a covered link between the Abbey and the hall.

It’s estimated refurbishment work will cost more than £1m.

Grants are being sought to fund improvements, but parish secretary, Andrew Parr, said: “If these are successful the Abbey will still have to find a substantial sum of money for the work.

“The result will be a 1,400-year-old historic building which is in use seven days a week.

“It will also allow items from the Abbey archives to be on public display.”

Bishop Willmott’s visit will coincide with the initial fundraising effort which is due to include a Teddy Bear zip wire ride.

Children can bring their favourite cuddly toy and send it on an exciting ride from the Bell Tower to the Abbey grounds.

The fun starts at noon and entry costs £2.
