Sheppey lobster landmark up for sale

The 6ft lobster which has become an Island landmark has been put up for sale, with potential buyers asked to shell out £1,000.

For about 16 years, the fibreglass sea creature has graced the top of different businesses at 68 Halfway Road, from Island Bait and Tackle to Grandad’s Attic.

But landlord Abby Chandler thinks its time for him to claw his way to a new life.

She said: “I own the building and it’s now the offices of a civil engineering and labour supply company, Devine Direct Labour, so the lobster doesn’t really fit any more.”

The creature, which also bears a heavy resemblance to a shrimp, is in the form of a giant sign, standing about 6ft.

Mrs Chandler added: “Quite a lot of people have been in touch from Lobster Car and Van hire to Lobster Records.”

The crustacean has now been taken down by the family and resides in the garden.

“He fits in quite well with the garden and if I don’t find a buyer, I’ll store him on the garage roof,” Mrs Chandler added.

“People know the lobster, it’s a landmark.”

It has been advertised in Facebook groups, with Tim Baker commenting: “I wish I could shell out that much for it.”

In April, Barry Beckham, former owner of Grandad’s Attic which proudly displayed the lobster, was visited by Scottish auctioneer Anita Manning as part of the BBC’s Antiques Road Trip.

The shop, which sold antiques and collectibles, closed in November after 15 months of trading, so Mr Beckham could spend more time attending fairs and events.

It can be bought by calling Mrs Chandler on 07949 298921.
