Sheppey College students create wacky hairstyles

Boarding passes were at the ready when Sheppey College turned itself into the Good Ship Swale to show off the work of its hair students.

The trainee stylists came up with stunning designs as part of the annual fundraising day at the Sheerness campus in Bridge Road.

Among the more outrageous was a blonde “stick man” worn by Natalie Jacobs, while Sophie Love was turned into a “cat woman” by Rebecca Sargent.

The day was a real team effort. Business and event management students designed the scenery and props, which were built by the college’s own construction crew.

Students studying health and social care invited elderly guests from Age Concern to see the show and enjoy tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches.

Anita Goymer, the college’s head of business, said: “It was a multi-faceted show with lots of different strands. The students turned the entire college into a cruise ship complete with boarding gang plank, railings, promenade deck, staircase, palm trees, deck games and entertainment.

“We picked the theme as Sheerness is a port and cruising has become very popular. It offers a huge range of jobs from building and engineering to catering, fashion, health, pampering and entertaining.”

The students staged two shows on Wednesday, one for invited guests and one for friends and parents. Guests – 100 at each sitting – had the option of paying £2.50 or £5 for different tiers of service.

They could also order souvenir photographs of themselves standing in front of a computer-simulated image of the grand staircase of the Titanic.

Anita added: “We had entertainers, piano music downstairs in the lounge and hand massage from our beauty therapists. It all tied in with our theme ‘Cruising To Employment’.”

The day raised £645, which will be split between the Blue Town Heritage Trust and the Island’s Roar for Harry children’s charity.
