Sheppey: Minster man caught driving stolen car jailed after police chase

A man has been jailed after being caught behind the wheel of a stolen car and driving 50mph over the speed limit.

Luke Jackson, 25, of The Broadway, Minster, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison.

The judge jailed Jackson after he admitted receiving stolen goods, possession with intent to supply cannabis and dangerous driving.

The court heard how at about 12.30pm on Friday, March 31 officers saw Jackson driving 80mph in a 30mph zone in Richmond Street, Sheerness.

When they requested him to stop he failed to do so and they pursued the vehicle, a grey BMW, with assistance from the police helicopter.

When the car came to a stop in St Helens Road at 12.47pm, Jackson got out and was seen throwing a yellow bag. Inside was 14 bags of cannabis with a street value of £350.

The car was also reported stolen and had false number plates. Jackson was arrested by officers and, during a search of his house, more cannabis - valued at £150 - was found along with drug paraphernalia.

Jackson was charged the same day and subsequently pleaded guilty to the charges.

Investigating officer, detective constable David Evans, said: "Jackson was seen to be driving in excess of the speed limit in a residential area putting many lives at risk which could have resulted in serious injury.

"He had no regard for others and when requested to pull over he decided to drive away from officers in an effort to evade the police.

"I hope this sentencing shows that we will not tolerate people breaking the speed limit and that action will be taken against those who do."
