Eight-hour stand off at HMP Swaleside after prisoner climbs onto roof

A prisoner was involved in an eight-hour stand-off with staff yesterday.

The HMP Swaleside inmate climbed onto its roof where it's believed he hurled tiles.

The jail's chapel was also reportedly damaged.

A Prison Service spokesman confirmed the incident, which started at 11am, was "resolved" by specially-trained officers at 7.30pm.

"No one was injured in the incident and the prison regime was not affected," he said.

It comes just weeks after another inmate scaled the roof of the same prison, leading to six hours of negotiations to get him down.
