Emergency response teams called to HMP Swaleside Sheppey prison incident

A disturbance at a Sheppey prison has now been brought under control.

At least one inmate was taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor, self-inflicted injuries following the incident at HMP Swaleside earlier today.

The Tornado Squad - a rapid response unit trained specifically to deal with prison riots - was deployed this afternoon following the trouble involving a small number of inmates.

The incident was isolated to one wing and no staff members are believed to have been injured.

A prison service spokesman said this evening: "Specially trained prison staff successfully resolved an incident at HMP Swaleside on 3 December.

"We do not tolerate violence in our prisons and are clear that those responsible will be referred to the police and could spend longer behind bars.”
