Island motorists braced for traffic chaos

One of Sheppey's main roads is being closed tonight for emergency repairs.

The A2500 Lower Road between Barton Hill Drive and Scocles Road at Minster is being shut from 7pm to be resurfaced.

The roadworks should be finished by 5am tomorrow, in time for the morning's commuters.

Machinery has been moved onto the site where a new £6.6 million roundabout is being built.

The closure will also affect Barton Hill Drive and Thistle Hill Way.

Traffic from off the Island heading towards Minster, Eastchurch and Leysdown will be diverted along Brielle Way and into Queenborough Road at the Aviator pub, through Halfway and then along Minster Road and Scocles Road.

There will be no through-traffic between Scocles Road and Cowstead Corner after 7pm.

There will be one-way traffic on Barton Hill Drive from the Lower Road for residents only.

A spokesman for Kent Highways said: "The closure is necessary to enable urgent carriageway pothole repairs to be carried out."

Lower Road from Barton Hill Drive to Scocles Road

Barton Hill Drive from Lower Road to Plover Road by Sheppey Community Hospital.

Thistle Hill Way from Bellflower Avenue to Lower Road.
