Plans for Medichem to move into new purpose-built unit in Queenborough, Sheppey

Plans have been revealed for a Sheppey factory to move into a new purpose-built unit in Queenborough.

Architect Harrison Mutch has put forward proposals to Swale council to build a new manufacturing and distribution facility for Medichem between the A249 and Queenborough Road, opposite Neats Court.

The company, based in Rushenden Road, manufactures hair and beauty products and was established in 1992 by born and bred Islander Tom Allsworth. It employs 150 staff.

In the planning statement, Chatham-based Harrison Mutch said: “This application seeks detailed permission for the construction of a manufacturing and distribution facility complete with offices and associated access, parking and serving areas on land that is currently vacant.

“The firm employs approximately 150 staff but is operating from a number of small units, which is difficult logistically.

“Furthermore, the firm is expanding rapidly and so new premises, specifically designed for their operations and future growth, have become essential.

“The vast majority of existing staff live on Sheppey and, naturally, the firm wishes to retain this existing staff base and, indeed, to expand by recruitment from the local area.”

According to the plans, the new facility will comprise storage for raw materials and packaging, storage for completed products awaiting shipping, manufacturing and packaging, administrative offices and staff facilities.

There would be 114 staff and visitor car parking spaces complete with cycle storage, a service yard for deliveries and collections and landscaping.

The applicant added the intention of the development was not only to provide a range of services and facilities to the local community and surrounding areas, but also to contribute to the local employment market.

At present, Medichem employs 150 staff – 15 in production, 100 in the warehouse, and 35 office staff.

If the new build is approved, this will increase to 180 members – 20 in production, 110 in the warehouse, and 50 office staff.
