Fire in prison cell at Swaleside in Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey to be investigated

An internal investigation is to be carried out after a fire started in a prison cell.

Two appliances from Sheppey fire station were called to Swaleside in Brabazon Road, Eastchurch, at 4.27pm on Friday.

Crews used a hose reel jet to put the flames out and fans to clear the area of smoke before leaving the scene an hour later.

The cause is unknown. A prison service spokesman said: "No staff or prisoners were injured.

"An internal investigation will take place."
