Firefighters have created a fire break to protect nearby properties from a large barn blaze

Around 40 firefighters spent the night dealing with a large barn blaze on the Isle of Sheppey.

Crews were called to Leysdown Road, Eastchurch at 10.10pm on Friday where a barn containing bales of straw was alight.

Four hose reel jets were used to tackle the flames and protect nearby properties.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said six fire engines remained at the scene this morning.

Crews have used farm machinery to establish a fire break around the barn to stop the flames from spreading.

It is not known at this stage how the fire started and an investigation is expected to take place.
