Amber Butler, of Minster, to have her work displayed at the Turner Contemporary gallery

A primary school student’s work is to be displayed at the acclaimed Turner Contemporary gallery.

Amber Butler, eight, from Augustine Road, Minster, has been painting for a year under the tutelage of Sheppey artist Deborah Pew.

The promising youngster, who attends St George’s primary, was urged to submit a selection of pictures for Children’s Art Week, a nationwide project which runs next month.

It resulted in Shimmering Seashells, a colourful, beach-themed portrait, being chosen to go on show at the Margate gallery where work by celebrated and influential artists such as Tracey Emin is housed.

The youngster’s mother, Alex Butler, who attends weekly painting classes with Amber, said: “I’m very proud of her.

“She’s not been happy with what she’s done, and always thinks she could do better, but I tell her I’ve never had any of my pieces shown in a gallery,”

Amber’s work will be on display at the Turner from Saturday, June 13, to Sunday, June 21. From there, it will form part of exhibitions taking place in the Isle of Wight and Leicester. Alex said the whole family will take a trip to Margate next month to see her daughter’s painting.

“I haven’t been to Margate since I went there on my first family holiday, aged five – so this is a great excuse to go back,” she said.
