A Sheerness woman has had her head shaved for charity in memory of her father and brother-in-law, who both died of cancer.

Dhareigne Pearce, of Victoria Street, went under the clippers on Saturday, July 6, nearly 18 years to the day since her dad, Les Ridley, died.

The 51-year-old’s brother-in-law, Ray Cawston, also died in June last year, so she decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Sheppey FM decided Hairy Monster, in Sheerness High Street, would do the honours of cutting the Victoria Street resident’s shoulder-length hair by picking its business card out of a hat.

The newly cropped grandmother surprised members of her family with her new look after she told them she was just popping to the shops on her own.

When she got back they all cheered her on for going through with it.

She said: “I love [my new hair]. Everyone keeps calling me Jessie J.

“If it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for me.

“I feel a bit liberated. It’s made me feel cheery and I’m very proud of myself as well, because it’s a big thing to have your hair cut off at my age.”

Different hairdressers around the town sponsored the shearing and in the end £210 was raised.
