Michelle Murphy, of St Agnes Gardens, Sheerness, shaves head for Cancer Research and St Thomas' Hospital

A grandmother faced shear terror by having her luscious locks chopped off for charity.

Michelle Murphy, of St Agnes Gardens, Sheerness, had her head shaved during a fundraising quiz night at the Co-op Club.

Proceeds from the hirsute venture will be donated to Cancer Research UK and St Thomas’ Lupus Trust.

Michelle, 48, a grandmother-of-three, said waking up bald would have otherwise been a hair-raising experience.

She said: “The next morning was very cold walking around with the air moving over my head.

“I said to one of my sons who lives with me, ‘Quick, get me a woolly hat’. I spent the next two days indoors with it on my head.”

Michelle said the prospect of being shorn terrified her, but having been diagnosed with lupus, a condition caused by problems with the immune system, the clippers were calling.

She’s vowed to raise £500 for the two charities and is currently £150 short of her target.

Michelle said some of the money will be put towards Cancer Research funds generated by the annual Sunset Seaside Stroll, which takes place in August between The Leas, Minster and Queenborough.

“It’s my small token for all the effort the organisers have put in over the years,” she said.
