Fire crews who helped tackle a large blaze which took hold of a multi-storey building in Sheerness are today being commended for their actions.

The Sheppey firefighters are being awarded Certificates of Congratulation at a ceremony to honour outstanding achievements in the service.

It comes after the blaze at the former Glass House building in Marine Parade on June 24 this year.

Fire gripped the home and flames were seen to be licking the outside.

Two people in their 20s were hospitalised with life-threatening injuries after the fireball erupted, while another suffered a broken pelvis, punctured lung and a broken leg after leaping from the burning building.

A woman was also taken to hospital with burns to her back and windpipe after falling from the building when she passed out.

Fire crews used ladders to rescue people from the burning building.

The firefighters will be recognised at an awards ceremony at Oakwood House in Maidstone later today.

Also given Certificates of Commendation are a Margate man who rescued a family of six from a burning buldng; a Thames-side firefighter who rescued a Gravesend man trapped in his home, and a carer who risked her life to save an elderly Whitstable resident when fire broke out in his kitchen among others.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service chief executive Ann Millington said ahead of the ceremony: "This special event gives us the opportunity to recognise the bravery and quick thinking of our staff and local people and it also reminds us of all the positive work going on around us.

"I am extremely proud of all those receiving awards today."
