Sheppey set for new Asda and Burger King outlets

Two major brands are coming to Sheppey.

Asda’s long-awaited move to Minster has been given the go-ahead and Burger King is set for Queenborough’s Neats Court retail park.

The supermarket giant will take a 14,700 sq ft site on Plover Road opposite the Island’s community hospital.

Developers Dalemarch (Sheppey) and Starnes will also construct four other small retail units. These could be a cafe, florist, dry-cleaners or similar.

There will be room for car parking, delivery area, power storage, click and collect, trolley bays and landscaping.

Initial applications were made to Swale council in 2014, after the developers bought the site the previous year.

It is thought the scheme, believed to cost £6 million, could provide up to 100 full and part-time jobs.

Attempts to reach Starnes’ director Richard Williams have been unsuccessful.

But speaking in August 2014, he said the new Asda and adjacent shops would deliver much-needed choice for those living on Sheppey.

Delays in obtaining permission means the project was put back a year.

Meanwhile, a franchise of fast food giant Burger King has exchanged contracts with Neats Court developers LXB Retail Properties.

It will be sited in a terrace to be built on land between Morrisons and the Five Bridges pub.

The 2,750 sq ft drive-thru joins Costa coffee which committed to the development in May.

According to LXB’s Giles Haywood, building work is set to start in the autumn with an opening date possibly in the spring.

The 1,200 sq ft Costa will be on one end of the terrace with Burger King on the other. Squeezed between them will be two 1,000 sq ft units.

Mr Haywood says negotiations are ongoing and he hopes to announce who will be taking these over soon. It is believed Burger King might employ between 20 and 30 people.

Additional to the new terrace, there are plans to build a two-storey, 7,500 sq ft structure between the new block and the A249.

This would likely be used as an office block. Across the road from the retail park, work is getting underway on Aldi’s £50 million distribution centre and HQ.

Diggers and workmen are on site, but the German firm will not be drawn on the project’s timeframe.
