Gruelling challenge for Sheppey runner Michael Rotherham

Charity marathons and triathlons are one thing but now Michael Rotherham is about to take on his biggest challenge – to run the length of Great Britain from John O’ Groats to Land’s End.

The 31-year-old has set himself the task of running 860 miles from north east Scotland to the tip of Cornwall in just 17 days which works out an average of 50 miles each day.

He is taking on the epic challenge, starting on Friday, March 23, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Mr Rotherham, a building surveyor from Minster, Sheppey, said: “I have completed endurance challenges before but I must admit this particular challenge exceeds anything I have ever attempted.

“I have been training hard over the past 12 months and have clocked up 3,000 miles but no amount of training will truly prepare me for such a challenge."

He added: "I look forward to the test and pledge I will give this my all and will run in the knowledge that we are raising money for a great cause.

“I chose to support Cancer Research as so many people and families have been affected, including mine, by this terrible disease.”

The former Minster College pupil has previously completed two Ironman Triathlons, four ultramarathons – a race longer than the traditional marathon length of 26 miles – a 24-hour non-stop run and has cycled from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

He admitted: “Not many people have done this before. It’s a huge challenge but I like to test myself with events that I don’t know I can complete.”

The event has been organised via Ultra Running and Mr Rotherham, who is married to Charly, will be doing it alongside six other runners.
