Queenborough Harbour Trust successfully bid for £500 from the British Marine Federation to help towards the cost of the 50-year-old’s qualifications.

Mr Johnson, who is a former director of the trust and sometimes helps its trot service, intends to spend the money on a local knowledge test for the waters around Medway.

He said: “The yachtmaster course has opened up a lot of doors for me but I still have a lot of training left to do to achieve what I want to achieve.

“It’s extremely generous of Queenborough Harbour Trust.”
