Trading Standards warns Sheppey homeowners to be wary of "pushy" doorstep callers

Island homeowners have been warned to be aware of “pushy builders”.

It follows a complaint to Kent County Council’s Trading Standards about a trader calling at homes in Minster and trying to persuade residents to have their guttering fixed.

He knocked at one man’s door in The Glen where his attempt to be allowed to carry out work was refused.

“The builder was very pushy, but the resident had the sense to say no and shut his door,” a KCC spokesman said.

“Then the trader was seen knocking on other doors in the Glen so there is a strong possibility he is targeting the Sheppey area at present.”

Trading Standards has advised the public to not agree to work without getting alternative quotes.

It’s also requested residents refrain from signing paperwork agreeing to the company starting work before the expiry of a statutory 14-day cooling off period.

People are also urged to use a reputable firm approved by family or friends, or use an approved trader via Checkatrade, KCC’s partner in a recommended trader scheme.
