Sheppey mum wins half-a-million for £1 William Hill bet

A mystery mum has landed more than half a million pounds for a £1 football bet over an astonishing 12 games.

The 59-year-old, who has not been named, beat the bookies with a 12-team accumulator which netted £574,278.41.

She placed the bet over the weekend at William Hill’s betting shop in Leysdown after successfully guessing 12 home or away wins.

Shop manager Carli Faulkner, 38, has paid out hundreds of thousands in 18 years in bookmaking but none as big as this.

She said: “This is the biggest win I have ever handled and all for just a quid. It is incredible that the woman got them all up. This just goes to show it can happen.

“She will be having a cracking Christmas. I am delighted for her. It’s real girl-power landing a bet like that. My biggest ever payout before was around £25,000.”

William Hill says the mum began betting £1 every weekend six years ago because she reckoned if she couldn’t beat her 58-year-old taxi-driver husband and 30-year-old son, both Spurs fans, to the TV she might as well join them.

As her son read out the games she picked the names of 12 teams she thought sounded “nice.”

Eleven of the teams were odds against outsiders including Burnley at 4-1 away at Southampton. Only one of the matches, Sheffield United to beat Hull, was odds on at 8-11.

It all came together when Cherries’ defender Steve Cook headed in Bournemouth’s winner in the 90th minute. Burnley, Brighton, Barnsley and Bolton also did the business for her.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: "Apparently, her husband had been doing the £1 weekend accumulator since he was 18. She started doing the same bet six years ago. She certainly had Lady Luck on her side as her hubby had never won anything like that.

"It just goes to show that if you can’t beat them, join them. The payout in this case is absolutely fantastic. We wish them well.

“In my 15 years in the business working for William Hill I have never encountered a bigger football win by a woman punter for just a quid.”
