Dock worker dies on cruise with wife and friends

A Sheerness docks worker who died on a cruise ship off Spain was “one of the best”.

Frank Attree, of Invicta Road, Sheerness, who had been terminally ill with cancer, set off on the 12-day trip with his wife, Pauline, and a group of friends last Monday.

He died, aged just 58, on May 17.

He had battled cancer on and off since 2012 but had recently been told there was nothing further that could be done.

The holiday was initially cancelled but Frank had said he wanted to go anyway.

Pauline’s sister, Sheila Smith, said: “Family meant a lot and the cruise was something that he thought would be nice to do to make some last memories together.

“His health was a concern but they thought it might be all right.

“Even though we knew he only had a certain time to live, it was still such a shock. We wanted so much for him to have the cruise and enjoy it. It’s heartbreaking to think of it happening where it did.”

Mrs Smith paid tribute to her brother-in-law. “He was one of the best,” she said.

“He was one of those who would do anything for you. He always had a smile, would always give you a hug. He had so many friends because he was such a good bloke.”

Frank, who was originally from Charlton, south London, married Pauline on the Greek island of Kos in August 2008.

He had two daughters from a previous relationship and Pauline, who is 51, had four sons. Between them they had 11 grandchildren.

A fan of Charlton Athletic Football Club, Frank, who also enjoyed bingo and watching Formula One motor racing, had been able to watch them for a final time last month. He worked at the docks up until December last year when he became too ill to continue.

Mrs Smith said Vigo, Spain was the ship’s first port of call after Frank died and he was due to be flown home this week. Funeral arrangements were yet to be made.

She added: “You couldn’t help getting on with him. He was there for you – there for anybody.

“He was loved by so many and will be sadly missed.”
