A man was taken to hospital after he was assaulted with what police believe to be a stick.

The 21-year-old, from Sheerness, was walking back from having a few drinks with a friend when he was attacked.

It happened near the Co-op supermarket in the town's High Street.

The man's mother, Susan Adams, said it was unprovoked and her son was set upon after two people said something to the pair as they walked past.

He was punched in the face and hit over the back with a weapon.

Although Mrs Adams said they are not sure what was used and his injuries look as though he had been whipped, police think it might have been a stick.

The man was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital with a head injury after the attack at around 4am on Saturday.

He did not need stitches as he was mainly bruised and an X-ray showed his neck was not fractured as originally feared.

"His friend phoned me to say he had been attacked and was in the back of an ambulance," said Mrs Adams.

"It was really worrying because I didn't know exactly what had happened.

She also thanked the people who stayed with her son until the ambulance arrived.

A Kent Police spokesman said officers are investigating, but there is no appeal for witnesses as there are other lines of inquiry.
