Police increase efforts to snare arsonist

by Emma Grove

Officers say they have strengthened their efforts to catch the Sheerness arsonist after an attempt was made to set another van alight at the weekend.

A white van was targeted at the junction of Invicta Road and Winstanley Road, Sheerness, on Sunday at about 9.50pm. Sheppey firefighters and Kent Police responded and the small blaze was put out quickly and no damage was caused to the van.

Although no one was injured and this latest fire didn’t cause any damage, it is the latest in a spate of vehicle arson which has been going on for more than a year.

Police have been carrying out a number of operations in a bid to catch the person or people responsible for the fires.

Catch

Along with high visibility policing, and door-to-door inquiries, police have also set up a dedicated phone number for people to call with information.

Borough commander for Swale, Ch Insp Tony Henley, said the attacks are very serious and police are taking action to catch those responsible.

He said: “I know the community is concerned about these fires but I am confident by working with our partners at Kent Fire and Rescue Service and residents we will have a breakthrough.

“I would urge people to think carefully about any information they have.

“Do you have concerns about someone you know who seems to have an unhealthy interest in fire?

“Or have you seen someone acting suspiciously around cars in the evening or in the early hours?”

If you think you can help, call 01622 604341, or call in at Sheerness Police Station where any information given will be treated in confidence. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
