Pupils at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey cleaned up part of Sheerness beach in litter pick organised by Swale council's seafront team

Plastic bags, cans and even a computer were among items collected during a clean-up of Sheerness beach by Oasis Isle of Sheppey Academy pupils.

Seven youngsters from both school sites joined Thursday’s litter-pick organised by Swale council’s seafront team.

Fifteen bags of rubbish were gathered up in two hours on the stretch of promenade between the academy and Ship on Shore pub.

Ian Arnell, Swale’s seafront officer, said the invitation is out to other schools to join the next seaside spruce-up in March.

He said: “We’ve already won a Blue Flag Award for the standards Sheerness beach has reached, but it is so important to keep the good work going by having these regular clean-up days.

“The award is based on quality of the water, environment initiatives and a daily cleaning routine, all of which we are proud to say we do achieve.

“But a big thanks must go to all our regular volunteers and especially the students from Oasis academy who helped us.”
