A Sheerness student is hosting a race night to help fund a fact-finding trip to Ghana.

Hayley Huggins from Invicta Road is hoping to make the two-week trip to the African country in March next year to see how its midwives work.

The mum-of-two, who is studying midwifery at the University of Greenwich, said: “It will hopefully give me a better understanding of the difference in staff practices at home and abroad.

“I can bring some knowledge with me and take what I learn home with me as well.

“It will also go towards my degree as I’ll have to write a report on my experience.”

The 25-year-old is halfway through her three-year course and is currently on a job placement at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford.

The race night, in which people place bets on horses, takes place at the Playa in Minster next Friday.

She hopes it will add about £1,000 to the £3,000 funding target she needs for her journey to Ghana.

The race night starts at 8pm and entry is free.
