Queenborough Rowing Club holds its annual Lilies Race in the Swale

A team from London walked away with the trophy at an annual Sheppey rowing competition.

A total of 10 boats took part in the third Queenborough Rowing Club’s Lilies Race – which is named after the Lilies buoy near Grovehurst jetty – on Sunday.

The 10 mile course goes around the marker after setting off from Crundells Wharf.

The victors were Trinity Tide which was represented by Trinity House, a group that aims to improve safety at sea and is celebrating its 500th anniversary this year.

A specially commissioned wooden trophy by Minster artist Victoria Claire was presented to the crew at the yacht club.

There were four different styles of boat taking part and crews from clubs in London, Gravesend and Essex.

Queenborough entered three gigs which came fourth, 7th and 9th although it was a close affair with the first five teams finishing within five minutes of each other.

Club member Stuart Smith said: “It’s getting bigger and bigger every year. We had six crews last year and this year we had 10 so it’s going really well.”
