Coastguard helicopter rescues young men from cliff at Royal Oak Point on Isle of Sheppey after trying to avoid wet sand

Two young men have been rescued by helicopter after getting stuck half way up a cliff on the Isle of Sheppey.

The pair - aged 19 and 23 - started to climb at Royal Oak Point to avoid sinking in wet sand while out for a walk last night.

But emergency services had to be called when they became trapped at about 8.10pm and a rescue mission was launched.

Sheppey Coastguard said rescuers were unable to reach them, so a helicopter from Portsmouth was drafted in to reach the pair.

The men were rescued by about 10.40pm and had suffered minor injuries.

They were checked over by medics at the scene, but did not need to go to hospital.

It is understood they had been visiting the area on holiday.
