EastEnders' Shaun Williamson comperes Sheppey Motor Neurone Disease fundraiser

Scores of people turned out for a charity day compered by EastEnders favourite Shaun Williamson.

Landlord Aidan Christie and his partner Jeanette Roberts put on the event at the Red Lion pub in Blue Town yesterday to support the Motor Neurone Disease Association and their friend Nigel Prettyjohns, 55, who has the illness.

It is a condition which attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord and then starts to shut down the muscles in the body.

Miss Roberts said the event, which took place between 2 and 6pm, was amazing. “We had such great support and it went really well,” she said.

“Everyone was just in great spirits and it was such a good day.”

The pub put on a karaoke hosted by celebrity compère Mr Williamson, best known for playing Barry Evans in EastEnders, with Jay’s Karaoke, which is run by Jay Lindsell.

A total of £805 was raised for the association.

Miss Roberts said: “We are really pleased and overwhelmed with the support and money we received.

“Nigel absolutely loved it. He laughed so much and he said one of his most favourite moments was Aidan singing Love Shack.”

Miss Roberts wanted to say thank you to everyone who attended the event for their “continued support”.

“We would also like to say a massive thank you to Shaun for giving up his time and making the day a huge success,” she said.

“Also to Jay’s Karaoke and all the great singers - you were all fantastic.”

Miss Roberts added: “The main reason we are doing all this is because of the support the MND Association gives MND sufferers.

“It’s just amazing, whatever Nigel needs the charity is there.

“Nigel said he will never be able to repay the charity for what it has given him during his illness, so we are all trying to rally together to raise as much money for the charity as possible.”
