A book about the history of a Sheppey town has been finished by members of a charity after a labour of love lasting more than three years.

Queenborough Remembered is the fourth in a series of titles that have all been published by the Freedom Centre in Sheerness, which supports disabled people.

Others in the series are Blue Town Remembered, Round About the Isle of Sheppey and Milton Regis Remembered.

The 160-page collection of memories and photos has been researched, written and compiled by centre members Beryl Kingsnorth, Dennis Smith and Wendy Noble.

Beryl died in 2010 and had done so much work towards it, that she left strict instructions that it be completed.

Dennis, of Ranelagh Road, Sheerness, has now achieved this and sent the works off to be published on Wednesday.

The 83-year-old, who has been a member of the St George’s Avenue centre for almost 23 years, said he was a bit shocked when he found out he’d been asked to finish it.

“It’s been a long, long time,” he said. “Beryl was so clever and she knew what she wanted to do with it. I’m pleased and I’ve got high hopes for it.”

It is hoped Queenborough Remembered, which is ‘a story of a town and its people’ and includes residents’ memories of the industries and the close-knit community, will be available by next week for £7.95.

Money raised from sales will go back to the charity.
