Floating car takes to the Swale at Harty Ferry after Sheerness friends modify Peugeot 206

If you were looking out over the picturesque Swale at the weekend and saw something a bit odd - don’t worry, your eyes are not playing tricks.

On Saturday afternoon, you have may have witnessed two men braving the high winds and bitter cold to sail across rough seas... in a Peugeot 206.

The epic voyage from The Harty Ferry Inn, Sheppey, to Oare, near Faversham, was the brainchild of Mike Bolton and Lee Dewson.

The pair wanted to raise money for the RNLI doing something challenging and inventive.

Despite only testing the modified vehicle on water once before, the duo successfully completed the distance - taking just 20 minutes.

But the journey from French-made banger to amphibious dream machine has not all been smooth sailing.

They began designing the vehicle six months ago, purchasing the clapped-out Peugeot from a scrap dealer and using Mr Bolton’s knowledge as a mechanic to fix it up.

But the amateur seafarers experienced a snag early on when they were forced to replace a costly faulty outboard.

However, with a bit of determination and a few out-of-pocket expenses, they were ready to set-off on the unusual cruise.

Mr Bolton, of Sterling Road, Tunstall, said: “It was about half-a-mile from one side to the other, but it seemed a lot longer.

“There was water going everywhere, it was good fun, but once you realise you’re in the middle of the cold stretch of water, it is a bit hairy.”

After reaching Oare, the twosome completed the final leg of the trip by drying-out the Peugeot with a mile-long drive to the pub for a celebratory pint.

He added: “The reason we did it in the wet and cold in a car, is the RNLI would go out in a lot worse than that.

“We’ll do more for them, maybe a flying pushbike.”

So far, they have raised more than £800 for the RNLI.
