Toilet bins in food trolleys at supermarkets in Sittingbourne and Sheppey

Two mums have spoken of their shock after supermarket trolleys were used to transport bins containing sanitary waste.

A Personal Hygiene Services worker was caught on camera using the trolleys to move bins through Swale supermarkets.

Morrisons in Neats Court was where Daisy Campbell filmed the PHS worker loading his van then returning the trolley back into the bay.

The 40-year-old, from Warden Road in Eastchurch, said: “I was there at about 9.30am and was staring at the van in front, not really taking in what he was doing and then it suddenly clicked.

“He had put the dirty bins in the trolley. They had stains on them.”

The administrator said she thought it might be a special trolley only used for that purpose but was shocked when he put it back in the rack for other shoppers to pull out.

She said: “It made me feel sick. We all know trolleys aren’t the most hygienic things but this crossed a line.”

Three days later , someone else spotted who they suspect is the same man repeating the episode at Mill Way Asda in Sittingbourne.

She said she was told PHS would speak to the worker in question about sanitation but had not by the time he was spotted doing it again.

A PHS spokesman said: “We are aware of the recent incidents and we are speaking to the driver.

“This is absolutely not the PHS way of providing service and we apologise for this lapse in standards.

“We have worked with the supermarkets involved to sanitise all the trolleys.

“We would like to reassure anyone who might be concerned that there is very little chance of someone becoming ill from coming into contact with the bins.

“Every bin is individually sanitised when we service them and the antibacterial materials that they are made from also help to minimise any risk of infection.”

Asda and Morrisons have been approached for comment.
