Ernie Batten has stood down as co-chairman at Sheppey United to take over as manager.

He has taken on the task of building a promotion-winning team as the club look to conquer the Kent Invicta League this season.

The former Sheppey player, who lives and works on the Island, is determined to get it right - and entertain along the way.

Batten said: "With what is going on at the club off the field, we need to make sure we are getting it right with the football as well.

"I am a great believer of playing football a certain way that local people will come and enjoy.

"There has been investment made on the pitch and hopefully that can be a catalyst for Isle of Sheppey football.

"We want to play passing football and entertain the crowds. I believe we can have success and draw the local people in.

"I recall playing for Sheppey years ago, in Sittingbourne, in front of 1,300 fans.

"Sheppey have been a big non-league side in the past and I see no reason why we can’t return to former glories."
