Sheppey Rugby Club head coach Rob Dengate isn’t getting carried away with their winning start.

Two wins from two, including a weekend victory over title hopefuls Cranbrook, has put the Islanders at the top of Kent 1

This weekend they face a major challenge when they travel to fellow unbeaten Old Williamsonians.

Dengate said: “Cranbrook will be up there or thereabouts at the end of the season and hopefully we can be also but it’s too early to be looking at the table.

“We are top by a point but the main thing is that we are the only team to have scored bonus points in both of our wins. It’s testament to the hard work we have put in to training. The boys have been committed this season and we’re getting good numbers.

“But there is definitely room for improvement and you can see that in the two wins, where we’ve conceded 20 and 27 points – 47 in total. Hopefully, we can keep getting better.”

Sheppey lost their first nine league games last season and were relegated from London 3 South East but Dengate believes the club are looking much stronger now.

He said: “They are executing the game plan now and we are seeing that impact into the games on the Saturday. These are the things that we began implementing last season and during the summer and the players are now seeing it pay off."
