Sheppey Rugby Club lost a crucial promotion battle at the weekend, but aren’t giving up on the chase.

Their 8-3 defeat at Vigo leaves them eight points adrift of the Kent 1 leaders in fourth – with Cranbrook and Beccehamian in between – as all four battle for promotion.

A home game for Sheppey against Lordswood on Saturday will mark the halfway point of the season.

“We are still in the hunt,” said coach Rob Dengate, whose side had been unbeaten in six.

“We’ve beaten two of the top three and only narrowly lost to Vigo. We just need to have that commitment and reliability on a Tuesday, Thursday (for training) and a Saturday and we’ll be OK.

“We’re still targeting the top four and we’ll see how it goes."

Two could go up from Kent 1. The division’s winners automatically, while the second-placed team will face a play-off against another runner-up from the region.
