Minster's Ross Wilson hopes to raise cheers back home as he begins his Rio Paralympics table tennis bid

Ross Wilson hopes to make his country proud when he takes part in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.

The table tennis action begins on Thursday and Wilson will be taking part in his second Paralympic Games.

The 21-year-old from Minster has had to overcome a series of injuries since taking team bronze at London 2012 and admits repeating that feat will be a tough ask.

He said: “We had a lot of different sparring partners at our Slovenia camp (for training). Since we’ve been back from there we’ve kicked on in training and everything is going well. The team is well prepared and I can’t wait to see how everyone else does as well.

“Everyone wants to win a medal and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want a medal but with everything that has happened since London, success for me would be just giving it everything and taking each game as it comes.

“If that results in a medal, I’d be over the moon. But if not, I just want to do myself and country proud.”

Wilson competes in the men’s class 8 singles (SM8) and men’s class 6-8 team events.
