1,000 jobs promise of huge supermarket depot

A SUPERMARKET giant is to create 1,000 jobs in Kent by opening a huge distribution warehouse on a new business park.

Morrisons is planning a 920,000 sq ft complex at Sittingbourne’s G. Park - which hasn’t even been built yet. More than 20 football pitches would fit into the site.

It will be the biggest ever pre-let warehouse development in the South East. Morrisons is the first company to sign up to the G Park, a 126-acre logistics park near Kemsley.

The company has agreed a 20-year lease with a rent across two buildings of approximately £5.4 million each year. Morrisons will use the centre to service and supply its South East stores.

Included in the plans for the site are kinetic plates in the estate roads, to generate power from every vehicle moving in and out, rain water harvesting and recycling, energy efficient lighting and low water use appliances.

Morrisons will be the first unit to begin construction at the park, which will have four distribution centres built on it.

FactfileMorrisons depot will cover about 21 acres. Maidstone's Fremlin Walk shopping centre is 32 acres and Canterbury's Whitefriars centre 12 acres.

G. Park is a 126-acre logistics park near Kemsley. It is one of the largest development sites in the South East and was purchased in July 2006 for £20 million from Kemsley Fields.

It is a joint venture between Gazeley, a "global provider of sustainable logistic spaces", and Standard Life Investment Funds.
