Sittingbourne pensioner's miracle escape

A great-grandfather whose car overturned has thanked the other drivers who helped him through his ordeal.
Brian Woodward’s Honda spun several times before ending up on its side in last Thursday’s accident in London Road near Bapchild.
It happened at 3.40pm near the junction of Hempstead Lane as the 78-year-old retired electrician lost control of the car while heading home to Kings Mill Close, Sittingbourne.
It hit the central reservation before coming to rest with Mr Woodward trapped inside.
Passing motorists immediately rushed to his aid, offering words of comfort and doing their best to release him before emergency services arrived.
Mr Woodward said: “I felt so reassured by everyone who was there at the scene before the fire brigade turned up. I’m very grateful for everything they did for me.”
Mr Woodward was practically unscathed in the smash in which no other vehicle was involved.
He suffered minor bruising when he fell to the floor and hit the passenger window after removing his seatbelt in an attempt to escape with the vehicle still on its side.
Fellow drivers tried to smash the car’s windscreen to free him. He was eventually released by Sittingbourne and Faversham fire crews who cut the roof off the car and hoisted him out.
With Kent Air Ambulance on standby, Mr Woodward was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by road.
He was released at 11pm following a scan.
His daughter Lesley Warren, 41, who lives in Iwade, heaped praise on those who came to her father’s rescue.
She said: “When I got to the hospital, the ambulance guy said to me, ‘Your dad’s car spun so many times it was like he’d been in a washing machine without the soap powder’.
“So on behalf of myself and my brother, David, I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who was at the scene for helping him and making him feel safe.”
The section of A2 was closed for more than two hours following the accident.
It was reopened at 6pm.
