A Facebook group which offers members a trip down memory lane is proving to be a big hit.

Within 10 days of The ME Sittingbourne Post Code Group going live it had more than 2,100 members. Now it has more than 3,000.

It was set up by Mark Foster for anyone who lives, or has lived, in the area to share their memories and photos of the town from yesteryear.

The married father-of-two, who lives in Brier Road, Borden, says he was inspired by a similar group for people living in Medway which has more than 7,000 followers.

He said: “I found the Medway site a couple of weeks ago. I used to live there and saw it had lots of old faces on it so I thought ‘let’s give it a go’.

“It’s just a memory site where people can chat about where they grew up, old school times, post photos, talk about the sweets they used to eat that are no longer sold etc. No advertising or gossip is allowed.

“It’s gone mental. The youngest person on there is 13 and the eldest 76. There’s even people from New Zealand and America that have links to the area.

“I didn’t expect it to take off like it has. It was just a bit of fun, but people seem to be addicted to it. Some have said they can’t keep off it and they’re not getting any work done.”

The site is also proving to be a learning curve for the 50-year-old who is a metal worker for Bredgar-based chandelier manufacturer and glass restorers Wilkinson plc.

Mr Foster said: “I was born and bred in Medway but moved to Sittingbourne in 1993. It’s great because I’m learning all the time about how the area used to look.

“The group is just a little hobby, something I like to do in the evening.

“My wife Cheryl thinks it’s a good idea but she probably also thinks I spend too much time on the computer especially when I recently took over the running of the Swale Topics group too.”
