Air ambulance called to crash on A2 at Keycol Hill, Sittingbourne, involving lorry and cyclist

A cyclist is fighting for his life in hospital following a crash involving a lorry on the A2 at Sittingbourne.

The accident happened just after 3.45pm yesterday at Key Street Roundabout.

Two ambulances and two medical cars were sent along with the police and the air ambulance, which landed in a nearby field.

The patient, who suffered life-threatening abdominal injuries, was flown to the major trauma unit at St George’s Hospital in London where he remains in a stable but critical condition.

Officers closed Keycol Hill in both directions. Traffic exiting the A249, and travelling from Key Street and Sheppey Way towards the roundabout was diverted.

The road remained closed until 7.45pm. Many residents reported stationary traffic in surrounding streets as a result.

At the time of the incident, the man was riding a blue bike which collided with a lorry from Sheerness-based Mike Whalley Fresh Fruit Coldstore Distribution Ltd.

A spokesman for the company said: “It is with great sadness that Wednesday’s terrible accident has happened.

“Everyone at Freshfruit distribution wishes the gentlemen involved a speedy recovery.

“We will obviously cooperate fully with any investigation held by any authorities.”

A spokesman for the force said: “The accident is being investigated by the serious collision investigation unit.

"Witnesses or anyone with any information who has not already spoken to the police, is asked to call the unit on 01622 798538.”

Many residents reported stationary traffic in surrounding streets.
