Bronze age henge possibly found on land in Iwade owned by Persimmon Homes

Archaeologists remain tight-lipped about rumours they have unearthed an ancient meeting place in Iwade.

Teams are continuing to dig at a site off Sheppey Way where a 400-home development is currently taking shape.

They have so far uncovered two ditches which experts say could either be evidence of a bronze age henge or an ancient cattle pen.

It’s estimated the dig will take another four weeks to complete, and SWAT Archeology, the company carrying it out on behalf of developers, Persimmon, said further soil tests needed to be taken before they can ascertain the land’s history.

But villager, Graeme Horner, whose house in Mansfield Drive overlooks the site, said early indications suggest it may be of some significance.

Mr Horner, 75, who said he’s been involved in archeology for “60 years” said: “The area being investigated consists of two concentric ditches.

“The inner ditch appears to be continuous, whereas the outer one appears to have a break in it.

“This would suggest to me it was an entrance to a henge. “But this clearly depends on the date of the ditches, which at the moment I’ve no way of knowing.

“I’m waiting for confirmation like everybody else of the site’s origins. “It’s exciting because they are unearthing part of a very old landscape prior to the development of the village.”
