Angling competition in memory of Steve Langley, who died of gunshot wounds at Bax Farm, Lower Road, Tonge, near Teynham

A fishing competition is to be held in memory of a popular businessman who died after being shot.

The Steve Langley Memorial Day will take place on Sunday, May 11, at Bax Farm Fisheries in Tonge near Teynham, where the popular dad of two died.

There will be various competitions at the venue, which was managed by Mr Langley – a former Sittingbourne firefighter from Highsted Valley – and has three lakes.

Allan Jordan, who is helping run the fisheries and is one of the memorial day’s organisers, said: “We wanted to do something to remember Steve in the way he would have wanted. He was a dedicated fisherman, and the lakes were his babies.”

Mr Jordan said money raised from the all-day fishing contest, which will end with a barbecue by the lakes, will go towards the retired firefighters’ fund and Kent Air Ambulance.

The emergency helicopter service was chosen because it attended when Mr Langley, 56, was found fatally wounded on November 30.

Mr Jordan said more than 20 people had signed up for the memorial day, which has capacity for about 100 entrants.

He said Mr Langley’s family were also due to attend. “We hope as many people come along as possible to remember Steve,” Mr Jordan said.

The memorial day starts at 10am, and entry costs between £4 and £5. To book, or for more details, call the fisheries on 01795 520887 or email sales@unitybaits.com

  • Simon Olsen, 54, of no fixed abode, has been charged with Mr Langley’s murder. He is due to attend a plea at a case-management hearing today (Thursday) at Maidstone Crown Court, where a trial date has been set for Tuesday, April 22.
