Blogger from Lower Halstow discusses battle with depression for national campaign

A baking blogger is helping people across Britain talk about depression.

Lower Halstow resident Britt Whyatt was asked by mental health campaign Time to Change to take part in its social media campaign #smallthings.

The 27-year-old jumped at the chance to work with the charity.

She said: “I have admired it for quite a while, especially after my own journey. I just wish I knew about them earlier.”

Ms Whyatt featured in a video discussing her battle with the illness, which lasted nearly 10 years.

So far, it has had more than 600,000 views, and Britt’s contribution was picked up by the national press, radio and billboards around the country.

She spiralled into depression when she was just 16 after her mother died from cancer.

She added: “I was put on strong medication, but since then baking has really helped me out of it.”

As her depression lifted, she started her blog, shewhobakes.co.uk. Two years on, the blog has been incredibly successful, and now she’s hoping others can learn from her experience.

The campaign focuses on ways people can cope and support those with depression.

“The smallest things make all the difference, and I wish I could go back to tell myself that,” she said.
