Support is needed to help save the Sittingbourne and Kemsley Light Railway.

The land the popular tourist attraction passes through is being sold and trains will not run beyond Boxing Day if it cannot be saved.

English Heritage is considering making it a listed building and pleas are being made to Swale Borough Council to protect it in the massive town regeneration project.

If the site is forced to close, the team that runs it will be forced to only save the most valuable items and sell off the rest to pay for storage costs.

Sadly, some may be sold for scrap if this is the best price they can find - but is a last resort.

The land is owned by M-Real, which announced earlier in the year that it would be selling the paper mill and land - which the railway runs over.

The railway was used by the mill when it first opened but kept on as a tourist atrraction when it ceaseds to be used for this purpose.

The land can be bought by the S&KLR but unless money can be found to buy it or the site is protected, it will be forced to close and could be swallowed up into the regeneration plans.

The Save Our Steam Railway appeal has been launched and railway enthusiasts, staff and volunteers are hoping for support from people in Swale to help save the railway.

People are being asked to display posters and write letters to help with the campaign.

They are available from the railway and can also be downloaded at www.sklr.net or collected from the KMG office in Sittingbourne High Street.

You can email info@sklr.net or post it to SKLR, PO Box 300, Sittingbourne, ME10 2DZ.
