A woman had to be cut from the wreckage of her car after a crash involving an ambulance on a 999 call.

Chalkwell Road, Sittingbourne, was closed for about an hour while firefighters used hydraulic equipment to free her.

The crash happened at about 9.55am on Tuesday and caused long tailbacks in the centre of Sittingbourne, especially on nearby London Road.

The ambulance crew was treated for shock at the scene but were not thought to be seriously hurt.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with suspected neck and spinal injuries.

Neil Ryder, watch manager at Sittingbourne fire station, said: "With any sort of road traffic collision there is a risk of neck injury from whiplash and we didn't want to take any risks with the woman in the car.

"We cut the side doors off to give us some space to get her out onto a spinal a board."

Traffic congestion had eased by about 11am, when the damaged ambulance was taken away.
