Delays after person hit by train near Sittingbourne

All lines have now re-opened after a man was killed when struck by a train near Bobbing this morning.

It's believed the man was hit at Simpsons Crossing near the Bobbing Apple pub, under the A249.

British Transport Police issued a statement following the incident earlier today.

It said: “BTP officers were called to the line between Rainham and Sittingbourne... after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and Kent Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 9.24am.

"Medics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service also attended, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene."

The death is being treated as unexplained and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Police are working to establish the identity of the dead man.

In total, 26 trains between London and the coast were cancelled as a result of the incident, at about 9.25am.

A replacement bus service between Faversham and Gillingham was in operation while police and rail teams carried out investigations, but a full rail service was restored by 1pm.

It comes just five months after mum-of-two Joelli Budd took her own life there.

Emergency services were called on Sunday, December 22.

The 35-year-old former manager of the Ypres Tavern in West Street, Sittingbourne, was declared dead at the scene.

An inquest in April found that she had committed suicide after years battling alcohol problems.
