Police carrying out door-to-door enquiries following Sittingbourne house fire

Police are carrying out door-to-door enquiries following a suspected arson at a house in Sittingbourne on Friday morning.

An elderly couple living next door in Saffron Way were rushed to hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poison after the fire.

The pair were woken by their carbon monoxide alarm sounding in their home in Saffron Way, Milton Regis, just before 6am.

A relative, who doesn't wish to be named, said: "If the alarm had not gone off they would be dead."

Two fire engines from Sittingbourne station were called to the incident.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hosereel and two covering jets, which pass larger quantities of water, to tackle the flames.

Smoke and fumes were cleared from the property using large fans.

The scene was cleared by 6.45am.

A woman in her 20s who lives in the AmicusHorizon property where the blaze broke out, was not in at the time. it's understood Kent police broke the news to her via a phone call.

Forensic officers could been seen investigating in the hours after the fire.

A police spokesman said: "The incident is being treated as arson.

"House to house enquiries have been carried out.

"No arrests have been made but the incident is ongoing."
